Alfalfa is one of the most nutritious forages our mama cows can have. So, we try to always have some growing on our farm. Unfortunately, a stand of Alfalfa only lasts for a few years. This year was a replanting year in one hayfield. However, Alfalfa we planted in the optimum window of late August-early September didn’t see enough rain to germinate until recently. The baby Alfalfa pictured should be several inches high by now. We hope these small plants can store enough energy to hold on through the coming winter.
We’re always pushing the forage limits on our small farm at Fleming Family Beef. When others start feeding hay in December most years, we start feeding hay in November. However with this year’s dry summer, grass has gone dormant early and hay had to be offered in October. Yup, it seems like this year, the unusual has become the usual.
Calves come in the fall at Fleming Family Beef. Calves enjoy the (usual) pleasant weather in the fall and are allowed to mature a bit before winter makes life a little tougher. These youngsters, less than two weeks old, are hanging out while their mothers are getting extra feed nearby.
This weekend, Fleming Family Beef was a sponsor for the Columbus IN Keto Potluck Picnic. They even featured our ground beef as part of the Build Your Own Keto Sandwich bar.
You can create your own at home with our ground beef.
It was an amazing opportunity to get together with the community, and we were thrilled to play our part to help bring everyone together. We're grateful for the afternoon of fun, food, and community that this potluck brought to the city of Columbus.
